Our Technology
A Platform Technology Unlike Any Other
MimiClon’s proprietary UBM™ (Urinary Bladder Matrix) technology is the core of our company’s business. This technology is used in the manufacturing of our Mimicsurg, MimiClon membrane, and Mimic Powder product lines and is the only commercially available form of UBM.
UBM technology is based on the research of MimiClon’s founder, the late Alan Spievack, MD. Dr. Spievack, inspired by the regenerative capabilities of salamanders, studied cell regeneration and extracellular matrices (ECMs), ultimately leading to the development of UBM technology.
Characteristics of UBM Devices
MimiClon’s non-synthetic, fully-resorbable devices are minimally processed to remove cellular content and mitigate the inflammatory response1,8. This proprietary manufacturing process preserves the integrity of essential structures and molecular components, resulting in devices which contain a collection of collagens and other proteins10 including laminin, and proteoglycans11, which aid in healing. UBM devices are a naturally derived, three dimensional scaffold with two distinct layers.
What are Macrophages and Why do they Matter?
Macrophages are recognized as primary regulators of wound healing and have two main phenotypes, M1 and M2.
A higher M2:M1 ratio has been associated with site-appropriate tissue remodeling, whereas a higher M1 response is associated with scar tissue formation and/or tissue integration response.
The M1 phenotype is considered pro-inflammatory. Having a higher M1 response is associated with scar tissue formation and/or tissue integration response1.
The M2 phenotype is considered anti-inflammatory and is associated with new tissue deposition. A higher M2:M1 ratio has been associated with site-appropriate tissue remodeling1.
Cellular Responses to UBM
After a UBM device is placed in the body, white blood cells including macrophages and neutrophils will enter the UBM scaffold to initiate the remodeling response. Fibroblasts will also enter the scaffold, depositing various collagens that provide strength and structure for the new tissue, and new blood vessels will form transporting blood and nutrients to the site of repair1.
UBM provides an environment where the body is more likely exhibit a higher ratio of M2 to M1 macrophages, which has been shown to facilitate the remodeling of site-appropriate tissue. Instead of scarring, healthy tissue will form that mimics the structure and biomechanical functionality of the surrounding anatomy1. Over time, the devices will fully resorb and completely remodel into the host tissue, leaving no foreign body.
